What's in a Colombia Marriage Visa Tipo M Letter Package? (And Why You Need Both)
A Colombia marriage visa (Visa Tipo M) application requires a request letter from the Colombian spouse and a special power of attorney (poder especial) under Colombia's governing visa regulation, Resolución 5477 de 2022, Article 67. Our first template expands the required request and cohabitation letter into a practical first-person relationship-history format — the cómo nos conocimos letter — and the second provides the poder especial required by Article 67. Here's what surprises most people though: the marriage certificate alone doesn't tell Cancillería much. It proves you got married — but it doesn't show them how you met, where you live together, or whether the relationship is real. These two Colombia marriage visa letter templates are where that story gets told.
Officers read these letters first — before anything else in your file. The marriage certificate gets checked later. A letter with specific dates and real details tells the officer your story is credible. A vague letter that describes feelings instead of facts is the single fastest way to get your application sent back, even if you've been together for years and your marriage is completely genuine.
Who needs these templates: Colombian nationals sponsoring a foreign spouse for a Tipo M visa, and foreign spouses who will file or manage the application independently. One thing that surprises a lot of people: the Tipo M visa for spouses has no minimum income requirement. Unlike almost every other Colombian visa, it's not about how much money you make — it's about how well-documented your relationship is. That's exactly why getting these letters right matters so much. The request letter must be signed by the Colombian spouse, and Article 67 requires the poder especial to include recognition of content and signature before a notary or Colombian consul before SITAC submission. Written in Spanish and signed by the Colombian spouse, this template tells Cancillería your story — how you met, how the relationship grew, where you live together today, and formally asks for the Tipo M visa.
Article 67 requires a special power of attorney authorizing the foreign spouse to request the Tipo M marriage visa. It must specifically cover this visa category.
An officer cannot verify “we fell in love.” They can verify that you met in Medellín in March 2022, traveled together, and began living at a specific address in July 2023.
Article 20 generally requires supporting documents to be issued no more than three months before registration. Article 67 separately requires the Colombian civil marriage record to have been issued within the prior three months.
Important Colombian Marriage Visa Tips?
Before you download, find your situation below. These templates cover specific scenarios — knowing which one applies to you will save you time and prevent mistakes.
You're married to a Colombian outside of Colombia?
You must register your foreign marriage in Colombia before you can apply for the visa. For this you must present the foreign marriage, with apostille, and spanish translation if needed to a Consulate or directly in Colombia with a Colombian notary. Once you do that you will get a Colombian Marriage Certificate. Remember to only submit documents with less than 90 days of issue date!
Cancillería or Consulate sent your application back
It's frustrating — but you're not alone, and it's not the end. Most corrections come down to the same two or three fixable issues. Most commonly more proof of your relationship, or exact details of where you will be living in Colombia with comoplete contact information. With the templats you lower your chance of errors for leaving out information. Download the templates, rewrite both letters using the guides below, and refile. You need Letter 1 because Article 67 requires the Colombian spouse's visa-request letter and statement of effective cohabitation. Article 67 also requires Letter 2, the poder especial authorizing the foreign spouse to request this visa. See exactly what went wrong →
Your Colombian spouse is in a different country when you file?
If your partner is traveling, working abroad, or just can't be there in person — The Ministry or Consulate will ask for why your not together. They will want to hear that you will be living together in Colombia. This will be apparent from the Migracion Colombia Immigration reports which are required to submit with the application.
Remember Article 67 requires the poder especial authorizing the foreign spouse to request this visa, with recognition of content and signature before a Colombian notary, foreign notary with apostille, or a Colombian consul.
What Cancillería Looks for in Your Marriage Visa Letters — Plain-English Breakdown
The officer reads your two letters side by side — not in isolation. If a date in the relationship letter doesn't line up with an entry stamp or a lease agreement, that's enough to trigger a correction request. Here's a plain-English breakdown of what they're checking for, based on Resolución 5477 de 2022, Article 67, together with the general document rules in Article 20.
| What the officer checks | What "good" looks like | What gets flagged | Applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full identity of both spouses Practical consistency check |
Colombian spouse: full name + cédula. Foreign spouse: full name + passport + country. Must match the marriage certificate exactly. | Name mismatch with apostilled certificate; cédula or passport error | Both letters |
| Narrative coherence — specific dates and places Practical consistency check |
Chronological account with specific years, locations, and context. Must be consistent with travel records, cohabitation evidence, and marriage certificate. | Vague narrative; dates contradict travel history or marriage certificate | Cómo nos conocimos |
| Current cohabitation address Res. 5477, Art. 67 |
Specific street address, municipality, and department where both spouses live together in Colombia | No address given; address contradicts lease or utility bill | Cómo nos conocimos |
| Formal VISA TIPO M request — visa category named Res. 5477, Art. 67 |
Final paragraph explicitly requests "VISA TIPO M DE CÓNYUGE NACIONAL COLOMBIANO/A" with foreign spouse's full name and passport number | Generic visa request without Tipo M; passport number absent | Cómo nos conocimos |
| Poder especial scope — Tipo M visa named | Expressly grants authority to apply for "VISA TIPO M DE CÓNYUGE NACIONAL COLOMBIANO/A" — must name the specific visa type, not just "immigration matters" | General POA; vague scope; Tipo M not named specifically | Poder especial |
| Authentication and three-month document freshness Res. 5477, Arts. 20 & 67 |
Article 20 generally requires supporting documents to be issued no more than three months before registration. Article 67 requires recognition of content and signature on the poder especial before a notary or Colombian consul. | POA lacks the required recognition; supporting document is older than the Article 20 three-month window | Both letters |
| Colombian spouse contact information | Physical Colombian address, Colombian mobile, and email address monitored for Cancillería notifications | Foreign address only; phone unreachable from Colombia | Cómo nos conocimos |

The Two Colombia Marriage Visa Letter Templates in Your Free Download
Both letters are written in Spanish (that's what you submit to Cancillería) and signed by the Colombian spouse. The download includes an English reference version of each one so the foreign spouse can follow along and understand every word of what's being signed.
Carta: Cómo Nos Conocimos
This is the most important letter of the two. Written by the Colombian spouse in first person, it tells your story — how you met, how things developed, where you live together now — and ends with a formal visa request. Cancillería reads this one closely.
- Written and signed by the Colombian spouse only
- Chronological narrative — specific dates and places required
- Current cohabitation address must be stated
- Formal VISA TIPO M request paragraph — non-negotiable
- Signed by the Colombian spouse; Article 20's three-month document window applies
Poder Especial
Article 67 requires a special power of attorney authorizing the foreign spouse to request this visa. This letter gives the foreign spouse that authority. Think of it as an official "you have my permission" from your Colombian spouse.
- Granted by Colombian spouse, accepted by foreign spouse
- Must name "VISA TIPO M" specifically — no general POA
- Recognition of content and signature before a notary or Colombian consul
- If signed abroad: Colombian consulate, not foreign notary
- Prepare close to filing so it falls within Article 20's three-month document window
What the Tipo M visa gives you — and what comes next
The Visa Tipo M for spouses of Colombian nationals authorizes you to live, work, and study in Colombia. It is initially valid for up to 3 years and renewable. There is no minimum income requirement to qualify, but they occasionally ask for bank statements — unlike most other Colombian migrant visas. Remember to not be out of the country more than 180 days or your visa will become invalid.
After 3 years accumulated as a qualifying Tipo M spouse-visa holder, you may be eligible to apply for a Visa de Residente (permanent residency) under Article 90 of Resolución 5477 de 2022, as amended. For Colombian nationality by adoption, the domicile period is generally counted from issuance of the Resident Visa; for a foreigner married to a Colombian, current nationality law may reduce that period to 2 years. How to Write the Cómo Nos Conocimos Letter — What Goes in Each Section
This is the letter Cancillería actually reads. Your marriage certificate just confirms you tied the knot — this letter is what tells them your story and convinces them the relationship is real. Take your time with it. The notes below cover exactly what goes in each section and the specific mistakes that get people sent back.
What to write in each section
- The date at the top: Complete the document close to filing. Article 20 generally requires supporting documents to have a date of issuance no more than three months before the visa application is registered. If you choose to authenticate the request letter, follow the notary's instructions on dating.
- Your name and ID: Use your full name and cédula exactly as they appear on your Colombian ID card. Even a small difference — a missing middle name, a number off — will create a mismatch with the marriage certificate and trigger a correction request.
- How you met: Be as specific as you can. What year? What city? What were the circumstances — through friends, at work, traveling, online? The more specific you are, the more credible your letter reads. "We met through friends" tells the officer nothing they can verify. "We met through a mutual friend at a gathering in Medellín in early 2019" tells a real story.
- How the relationship grew: Describe the visits, the video calls, the WhatsApp marathons at odd hours — whatever was real. Mention how many times you visited Colombia, or how many times your partner traveled to you. Be careful here: if you say "12 visits," the entry stamps in the passport need to back that up. Officers do check.
- Where you live together and when you got married: Give your full current address — street, neighborhood, city, department. This needs to match the lease or utility bill you're submitting as cohabitation proof. And mention your wedding: when it happened (approximate date is fine) and whether it was civil or religious. It needs to line up with the apostilled marriage certificate.
- Marriage reference: State whether civil or religious, with approximate date. It should match the Colombian civil marriage registry and any supporting foreign marriage document, if applicable.
- The visa request at the end: This paragraph has to be there, word for word. It's not optional, and it can't be paraphrased. The template includes the exact wording — just fill in your partner's full name and passport number. Cancillería needs to see the formal request to grant the Visa Tipo M.
- Your contact information: Use a Colombian street address, a Colombian phone number, and an email you actually check. This is where Cancillería sends notifications and correction requests. If they can't reach you, your application stalls.
Why Colombia Marriage Visa Letters Get Sent Back — and How to Fix Each One
If your application came back with a correction request, the reason is almost certainly one of these four. I've seen all of them — many times. The good news is every single one is fixable. Here's what went wrong and exactly how to correct it before you refile.
The letter describes feelings instead of facts
This is the number one reason letters get sent back. Phrases like "we fell in love" and "we knew we were meant for each other" sound genuine — but officers can't verify them. They need facts: places, dates, context.
The power of attorney was never notarized — or says the wrong thing
This one catches people off guard. They write a power of attorney and submit it without the recognition of content and signature required by Article 67. Or they authenticate it, but the document only says "general authorization to handle visa matters" instead of authorizing the foreign spouse to request this specific visa. Both can create a problem in the application.
No address — or the address doesn't match the lease
The letter says the couple lives together but provides no address, or the address doesn't match the utility bill or lease submitted as cohabitation proof.
The letter never actually asks for the visa
Some letters do a beautiful job of telling the relationship story — and then just... stop. There's no formal request for the visa. Without that closing paragraph, it reads like a personal essay, not an official visa application letter.
